History of Grissini

The origin of breadsticks dates back to the 17th century in Piedmont, in the city of Turin , where they were invented to satisfy the nutritional needs of the young Vittorio Amedeo II of Savoy , who suffered from digestive problems.

In 1679 , the court baker Antonio Brunero , following the advice of the court physician Teobaldo Pecchio , created a light bread, more digestible than the classic loaf. The dough, made with flour, water, yeast and olive oil, was stretched until it became thin, crunchy sticks, easy to digest and long-lasting.

Grissini, initially designed for the needs of the nobility, quickly spread throughout Piedmont , thanks to their versatility and lightness. They soon became a product appreciated even outside Italy, so much so that even Napoleon Bonaparte became a great admirer, bringing the "petits bâtons de Turin" to the court of France .
